Forum Guimarães - Book of Conclusions
What is the role of culture in the process of transformation of cities? How do European Capitals of Culture contribute towards the assertion and development of cities and regions? What impact does this type of initiatives have upon cities? Can Guimarães, as European Capital of Culture in 2012, contribute towards reformulating the European model of "Capitals of Culture"? What do cities and regions actually represent in the European integration process?
Forum Guimarães, (16-17 October 2009) has been an opportunity to discuss, reflect and deepen the understanding of the above mentioned issues, as well as others arising from the topics discussed during the Forum itself. For two days, politicians, professionals from arts and culture and academics from various European countries presented ‘success cases' and ‘failures' of the European Capital of Culture model, gave suggestions, questioned past solutions and suggested alternatives for the future, in a rich, open and enlightening debate. These have been two days of intense participation and involvement, echoed herein, through a collection of papers from our guest-speakers, as well as the conclusions drawn from the Forum.
