Is er toekomst voor de Arabische Lente?
Na de euforie van de geslaagde revolutie, slaat nu de stemming om. Is er wel toekomst voor de Arabische Lente?
De jonge Egyptische econoom Tarek Osman houdt op 14 september de 32e Globaliseringslezing. Van zijn hand verschijnt eind augustus Egypte, een geschiedenis van Nasser tot na Mubarak. Hij beschrijft wat er gebeurde met dit grootste en belangrijkste Arabische land sinds Nasser in 1952 de macht overnam. Hij analyseert de ontwikkeling van het Arabisch nationalisme en de radicale islam en gaat in op de gespannen relatie tussen moslims en kopten. Osman verklaart de gapende kloof tussen de kosmopolitische elite en de slecht opgeleide en werkeloze massa, waarvan de helft jonger is dan dertig jaar.
Met verkiezingen in het vooruitzicht -komend najaar- gaan we met Tarek Osman na wat de verwachtingen zijn voor Egypte en de regio. Wat voor rol is er weggelegd voor Nederland en Europa? Met bijdragen van Joris Voorhoeve (Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken), Han ten Broeke (VVD) en Monique Samuel (columnist Trouw). Moderator: Petra Stienen (Arabist, publicist en voormalig diplomaat).
Tarek Osman (1975) is geboren en getogen in Egypte en studeerde economie aan de American University in Caïro en de Bocconi Universiteit in Milaan. Hij woont afwisselend in Caïro en Londen en schrijft over de ontwikkelingen in Egypte in onder meer The Financial Times, The Independent, The Guardian en The Economist en voor internetfora. Hij geeft regelmatig commentaar voor CNN, BBC en Al Jazeera.
