Posters from the illustrious Shaffy Theater
As part of the 230th anniversary of Felix Meritis (a well-kown debating centre on the Keizersgracht) the Theater Museum presents untill 12 May 2008 a selection of remarkable posters from the illustrious period during which the building was better known as Shaffy Theater (1971-1988). During this period one could enjoy various experimental performances of dance, mime, theatre and music by groups like Maatschappij Discordia, Krisztina de Châtel, Festival of Fools, Hauser Orkater and Neerlands Hoop. The Theatermuseum has made a selection of the most beautiful and remarkable theatre bills of this era.
Early 1969 Steve Austen used one of the rooms in Felix Meritis for theatre performances. The first programme was Shaffy Verkeerd by Ramses Shaffy and immediately established the new name of the theatre as Shaffy Theater. From then o n more and more rooms and spaces of Felix Meritis were used for theatre and in 1971 the name Shaffy Theater became official.
In the following years the programme of the Shaffy Theater opposed itself quite radically from the traditional companies and theatres. It welcomed all kinds of theatre disciplines from theatre, cabaret and dance to mime and puppet play and gave way tot new experiments. Many young theatre makers used this unique opportunity to debut or to further develop themselves. Among them groups as Neerlands Hoop. Theatergroup Carrousel, Dance company Krisztina de Châtel, Maatschappij Discordia, Dogtroep, Funhouse, Will Spoor and Hauser Orkater.
The Theater Museum selected from its collection some the most beautiful and remarkable theatre bills of this era. A collection of posters which by now contains over more than 22.000 items.
