Interview Chantal Mouffe: Citizenship, Democracy and Pluralism

As a prelude to the Night of the Constitutional State (19 November in Felix Meritis), Chantal Mouffe (Charleroi, 1943) will deliver a lecture on the current liberal consensus democracy and will emphasise the importance of a multi-faceted and open political struggle.

Chantal Mouffe (Charleroi, 1934) is Professor of Political Theory at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster in London. She is internationally renowned for her ‘agonistic' approach to democracy and her critique on the Western democratic consensus. In her lecture on October 1st Chantal Mouffe will elaborate on her non-rationalist approach to the future of democracy and citizenship. Eva Kelder (Felix Meritis) and Juliët Jonkers (FORUM) interviewed Chantal Mouffe in her home on a leafy street in Barnet, one of the greenest boroughs of London. ‘I don't plead for conflict, but I do believe there is conflict and we need to make space for it.'
