Felix Meritis supports A Soul for Europe's initiative to make 2013 European Year of Citizens Through Culture

A Soul for Europe launched a common call to name the year of 2013 the European Year of Citizens through Culture.

Felix Meritis supports A Soul for Europe's initiative to make 2013 European Year of Citizens Through Culture.

Active citizenry and culture have gone hand in hand since the beginning of democratic notions in politics.  The European Council and Parliament will soon name the next European year for 2013.  Although 2013 being the "European Year of Citizens" is strongly supported, A Soul for Europe has been working to add a cultural element to this designation.  They would ask that 2013 be designated the European Year of Citizens Through Culture. Examples created by the Lisbon Treaty, as well as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, have clearly placed a focus on civil society and their right to access to culture.  This title adjustment would simply be an extension of these codified principles and initiatives.

European integration on various levels has changed the national identity of many states.  One aspect of life that politics and economics cannot, and should not change is the cultural history of any state.  This also applies to the new cultural heritages created everyday in countries across Europe.  A Soul for Europe strives to ensure that 2013 is the year to connect citizens with one of the most important aspects of their identity; access to culture.
