Felix Meritis in the Amsterdam Historical Museum

From 6 December 2007 you can visit the newly refurbished Room 12 of the Amsterdam Historical Museum. Visitors can experience the forgotten past through four different themes from the history of the eighteenth century.

The theme ‘Art & culture' pays special attention to Felix Meritis (which translates as ‘Fortunate by Merit'). Felix Meritis was the ‘enlightened' society of the increasingly emancipated middle classes and was dedicated to the pursuit of the arts and sciences. Founded in 1777 the society moved into the impressive building on Keizersgracht in 1788, which later became well known for its Music Room and other features. The Recital Hall in Amsterdam's internationally renowned Concertgebouw is a copy of the Felix Meritis Music Room.
