Vernacular furniture: conservation & restoration
Stichting Ebenist will organize a symposium on vernacular furniture at Felix Meritis on 14 and 15 November 2008. Whether it is painted Dutch furniture from Staphorst, Irish straw and wicker furniture or leather-covered chests from Transylvania, vernacular furniture addresses local needs with local products and therefore it expresses the people's own identity and character. But due to an ever increasing globalization, this essential part of our cultural heritage is threatening to disappear for ever. Eighteen international and Dutch conservators, researchers, curators and craftspeople will underline the importance of the conservation of this furniture, which is in a class of its own. It is the first time an event of this size is dedicated to vernacular furniture in Holland.
