The Strength of Africa: Top sport in Africa

The multimedia project The Strength of Africa is intended to show another side of Africa: a continent where people take their fortune into their own hands, have belief in their own capacities, and are striving daily to find African solutions to African problems. The Strength of Africa is not about misery but about the positive side of this continent.
In a series of four interviews a successful African is interviewed by a well-known Dutch colleague. Based on images and music fragments selected by the interviewee, the African personality introduces the theme of the evening and talks with the interviewer about his examples, sources of inspiration and enthusiasm.

Top sport in Africa
Africa's most predominant present-day heroes are sportsmen and sportswomen. Everywhere, from Cape Town to Cairo, people chant the names of football (soccer) players like Frederic Kanoute and Samuel Eto'o, and the current Ethiopian Olympic champions like Meseret Defar and Kenemisa Bekele. But more important than this is possibly the fact that sport in Africa is a source of incredible passion. This can be seen in abundance in events such as the Olympic Games.
Thomas Kwenaite was recently referred to in the Dutch newspaper De Pers as ‘the Mart Smeets of African football'. As a sports reporter for SuperSport (South Africa) he gives his no-nonsense opinion on sports events throughout Africa every day. Using the images selected by Kwenaite, sports presenter Mari Carmen Oudendijk and Stefan Verwer (director Lokaal Mondiaal) talk with him about Africa on its way to the Olympic Games 2008.

Following every interview (21:25-22:00), the Dutch television channel Nederland 2 will broadcast an episode of the IKON documentary Paul Rosenmöller and... The Strength of Africa
