The Strength of Africa: The film industry in Nigeria
The multimedia project The Strength of Africa is intended to show another side of Africa: a continent where people take their fortune into their own hands, have belief in their own capacities, and are striving daily to find African solutions to African problems. The Strength of Africa is not about misery but about the positive side of this continent.
In a series of four interviews a successful African is interviewed by a well-known Dutch colleague. Based on images and music fragments selected by the interviewee, the African personality introduces the theme of the evening and talks with the interviewer about his examples, sources of inspiration and enthusiasm.
The film industry in Nigeria
The Nigerian film industry is the third largest in the world after Hollywood and the Indian Bollywood. Nollywood is booming business and has a major influence on the Nigerian economy. The technology is not always fantastic, the dialogue is in our eyes sometimes longwinded, but the films exude dynamism. Tunde Kelani (Lagos 1948) is one of the grand old men of Nigerian cinema. Using images and sound fragments selected by Kelani, Belinda van de Graaf (film critic for the Dutch newspaper Trouw) talks with him about the film industry in Nigeria and about his or her sources of inspiration and vitality.
Following this (21:15-23:00) there will be a screening of Tunde Kelani's most recent film: The Narrow Path (2007).
Following every interview (21:25-22:00), the Dutch television channel Nederland 2 will broadcast an episode of the IKON documentary Paul Rosenmöller and... The Strength of Africa:
