The People's Palace for Diligence
Pictures on Flickr!
The famous ‘People's Palace for Diligence' (Paleis van Volksvlijt) in Amsterdam was destroyed by fire in 1929 and vanished for ever. It was a building for exhibitions and concerts, like Crystal Palace in London.
The People's Palace for Diligence is a new series of events. Different disciplines are united around a central theme, which always focuses on a meeting between arts and sciences.
GROW WITH THE FLOW
Each edition guests meet and explore the question if a cooperation between arts and sciences is possible. In the 1st edition Grow with the Flow, Annemiek Cornelissen (engineer) and Sachi Miyachi (artist) present a ceremony with scientific experiments in the Shaffy Hall. A Cabinet of Curiosities with video, edible art, live music, a short story and experimental use of turntables and samples.
With a.o.: Sanneke van Hassel, The Ambush Party and DJ Sniff.
SHAFFY HALL
The Shaffy Hall was well-known during the end of the 18th and the 19th century for its scientific research, especially in the fields of physics, chemistry and astronomy. The former Society Felix Meritis (1777-1889) united the arts and sciences according to the ideals of the Enlightenment. The People's Palace for Diligence is inspired by these ideas and continues these traditions in a contemporary way.
