The dilemmas of the network generation

Doors open at 7.30 p.m.

How much freedom do young people really have when making life and work related choices? And do they perceive the enormous amount of options as a blessing or a curse? It's about time that this network generation - that grew up with disappearing borders and an explosive grow in choice possibilities- scrutinizes their position and their upcoming chances and dilemmas.

In an interactive program the different aspects of the network generation will be discussed. In Joop Hazenbergs (founder Prospect) documentary Weg van de barricades (Away from the barricades) we meet a few of this network generations role models in the field of community involvement. Subsequently we will zoom in on the recently published Manpower-study De grenzeloze generatie op de arbeidsmarkt (The borderless generation on the labour market), a study that explores and intensifies the themes of an earlier MOtivaction-study. Haiko van der Pol (director Marketing and Communication Manpower) will provide the presentation. Many young people are looking for freedom, flexibility and responsibility in their work. At the same time, a lot of young people (poorly and well educated) that aren't able to cope well with a world without structure.

After the break the different speakers will try to find answers -together with the public- to three important questions that are present in the minds of the network generation. What about the social engagement of young people? Is this generation lazy and spoilt? Wouter Durville (OneforOne and NederlandCares) and Jesse Klaver (Member House of Commons) will tell us what they think. Should the labour market be more flexible to be able to facilitate youngsters? Emilie van der Lans (labour legislation lawyer) will debate on this topic together with Jeroen de Glas (FNV Young). Finally the ‘reverend of the south ax' Ruben van Zwieten and André Platteel (coach for young people and publicist) will provide their views on connecting in a flat world that has gone adrift.

Moderators: Laura van Baars (journalist Trouw) and Joop Hazenberg.

The evening will be concluded with a reception, offered by Manpower.
