Stop the Aid. Why aid is not working and how there is another way for Africa
26th Globalization Lecture with Dambisa Moyo
Dambisa Moyo was born and raised in Zambia, Southern Africa. She completed a Ph.D. in Economics at Oxford University and holds a Master's degree from Harvard University. She worked at the World Bank in Washington D.C. and at Goldman Sachs for 8 years in the debt capital markets, hedge fund coverage and in global macroeconomics teams. During this time she developed the thesis for her book Dead Aid - Why aid is not working and how there is another way for Africa. Moyo has everything to become the counterpart of Naomi Klein and Noreena Hertz, the ‘princesses' of the ‘other globalists'. Moyo puts into words what according to her many Africans think: "Why do you support our corrupt leaders? They give us nothing, and you give them everything.'
Instead bilateral aid should be abolished, according to Moyo. She envisions a third way for African countries: to do business with countries like China and India.
Peter van Lieshout, Project coordinator Development Cooperation of the WRR, will react to Moyo's lecture. This autumn he will round off an evaluation of 60 years of Dutch development cooperation. The discussion will be moderated by Marcia Luyten.
