Public Meeting on the Crisis in Georgia

After a period of low level hostilities a conflict broke out in Georgia on the 7th of August. In less than a week the situation escalated dramatically, resulting in many civilian causalities and many more refugees. It is to a certain extent unknown what exactly is happening in Georgia, and especially in South-Ossetia, as information from the region reaching us is often biased or vague. The purpose of this meeting is to shed light on the crisis in Georgia and to discuss what can and should be done, and to discuss what consequences the conflict will have on international relations.

Participants in the debate, among others: Maia Panjikidze (Georgian ambassador for the Netherlands), Jack Kroes (Board member of Press Now, media and Georgia expert), Guido de Graaf Bierbrauwer (Senior Programme Officer for the Caucasus, IKV Pax Christi),  Jan Marinus Wiersma (Vice-President of the Party of European Socialists in the European Parliament, member of European Parliament for the PvdA, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs), Arend Jan Boekestijn (Member of Parliament and Spokesperson on Defence and Development Cooperation for the VVD)

The meeting will be chaired by André Gerrits (Chairman Alfred Mozer Stichting and senior lecturer in East European Studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam).
The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions.
