Paul Scheffer (writer and publicist - Professor of Urban Sociology at the University of Amsterdam), Philippe Van Parijs (philosopher, economist and publicist - director of the Hoover Chair of Economic and Social Ethics of the University of Louvain (UCL), Visiting Professor at the philosophy departments of Harvard University) and Luuk van Middelaar (philosopher and author - Member of the Cabinet of the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, responsible for speech writing and forward strategy) were  invited to Brussels for a in-depth debate dedicated to Moral, identity and citizenship. Topics which are high on the agenda in the current state of Europe and our societies, and which were discussed in a dialogue with invited guests and participants.
Moderator: Annelies Beck (Vlaamse Radio en Televisieomroep).

Now, when the role of citizens is explicitly given a legal framework in the Lisbon Treaty, cultural institutions in Belgium and Europe will need to look into the implications and practical implementation of this provision for the work of the cultural sector. This reflection is best placed in the form of a public debate.

"If citizenship is to be taken seriously, one needs to form an opinion on the circumstances and processes under which citizenship is established. These are by definition cultural processes!" Steve Austen (Permanent Fellow of Felix Meritis Foundation, co-founder of A Soul for Europe and the European House for Culture).

The conversation was preceded by the presentation of ACCESS! European Agenda for Youth and Music by the European Music Council at 19:00 hrs. This evening was the start of the series of Conversations about day-to-day Europe organised by the European House for Culture.

Organised by: Felix Meritis, European House for Culture (Brussels), Festival of Philosophy, Flagey, Access to Culture Platform, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Belgium Brussels Capital Region - College of the Flemish Community Commission and Media partner Presseurop.
