Loya Jirga: Exit Afghanistan?
28th Globalisation Lecture
Films, interviews, conversations and discussions
Obama is sending an additional 30,000 soldiers to Afghanistan. What is The Netherlands going to do? Are we going to oust the Taliban or simply conduct development activities? The 28th Globalisation Lecture on 5 February will consist of a three-part program focusing on our civil and military relationship with Afghanistan.
A Loya Jirga, led by Linda Polman will begin at 2 P.M. Afghans, journalists, soldiers, development workers and members of the business community will discuss stories about Afghanistan that are reported on and some that are not. What do we absolutely need to know about Afghanistan? Then we will watch the premiere of the VPRO/Tegenlicht documentary Crime Scene Afghanistan, by Shoresh Kalentari (which deals with setting up a public broadcasting network in Afghanistan).
At 7 P.M. the evening programme will begin with Exit Afghanistan, a VPRO/Tegenlicht documentary by Mariusz Pilis and Olaf Oudheusden in which warlords and diplomats question what the West actually wants in Afghanistan. (The programme will be broadcast at 8:55 P.M. on 18 January on Nederland 2).
At 8:30 P.M. the Loya Jirga will continue with Mohammad Tariq Ismati (Executive Director National Solidarity Program (NSP) Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development) and Dick Berlijn (former commander of the Dutch armed forces). At the end of the evening those participating in the Loya Jirga will vote on the course to be followed: Do we leave Afghanistan or do we remain and in what form?
Programme:
14:00 hrs. Loya Jirga, part 1
15:30 hrs. VPRO/Tegenlicht documentary Crime Scene Afghanistan
15:00 hrs. Loya Jirga, part 2
