How does the historian deal with the past?

Debate between H.L. Wesseling, A.Th. van Deursen, J.A. Blokker and Maarten van Rossum about the subject ‘How does the historian deal with the past'.  Moderator: Hans Renders

The historian H.L. Wesseling describes in his new book Son and Father/Father and Son [Zoon en vader/Vader en zoon] his own and his father's history. The first part of the book tells the story of his youth in The Hague, his time as a student in Leiden, and his career as a professor and historian. The second part describes the life of his father C.D. Wesseling, who was a successful politician at the beginning of the 20th century. Around 1920 he had to stop his work as a politician suddenly because of political and personal problems. He remained active, however, and became a leading figure in the left-wing Catholic dissident movemnet during the interbellum.
