The Freedom Lecture Amsterdam is an annual analysis of the state of liberty, in Amsterdam as well as in the rest of the world.
Freedom in the Netherlands is under pressure. Privacy is no longer sacred; the state interferes more and more in the personal sphere of citizens, and politicians and the media make critical comments on judges' verdicts. The constitutional state is tottering.
In the meantime the dramatic events in the Middle East and Northern Africa show that citizens can take the initiative for change. Should we in this part of the world also regain our freedom ourselves?
The Freedom Lecture Amsterdam will be given by the flamboyant lawyer Inez Weski. Weski, famous for her ‘Goth' look and known for the defence of Desi Bouterse, will plead for the fundamental rights of citizens' freedom.
The Dutch-Egyptian theatre-maker Sabri Saad El Hamus will give a special solo performance.
Watch the 4 & 5 May Committee trailer here.
Organized by Felix Meritis and Amsterdam 4 & 5 May Committee.
Pictures: Valentijn Brandt (Weski) and Maarten van Schaik (El Hamus).
