Forum Amsterdam: The city is more than us
In 2008 en 2009 Felix Meritis and Mexit organised the series I Have a Dream.... Saskia Sassen, Richard Sennett, Halleh Ghorashi, Tariq Ramadan, Nilüfer Göle, Paul Scheffer, Jeroo Billimoria, Sadik Harchaoui and others presented their visions of the future for a changing society. These visions are now collected in a compilation that will be presented and translated into the daily practice of the city during Forum Amsterdam: The city is more than us.
How can we provide cultural and social connections in the city? Is a society based on pluriformity and diversity possible? A public domain where a real exchange of views on various fields in civil society can take place will lead to a sharpening of our vision and interpretation of our acting perspective. What role do religion, identity, education, the city, democracy and other factors play in our existence? Who will enter into the public debate with vision and ideology? What are the chances and challenges? What are the intrinsic drivers for the future?
After a welcome and introduction by Linda Bouws (director Felix Meritis), Paul Scheffer (Professor of Urban Geography, University of Amsterdam) will give a keynote speech. A fragment of the VPRO Tegenlicht documentary Group Eight about the Amsterdam primary school Oscar Carré will be shown. Oscar Carré is a mixed school where differences are a fact and children are prepared for a future as world citizens by means of art and culture. Director of the documentary Bregtje van der Haak and Astrid Hooyberg (director of the Oscar Carré School) will be interviewed about the documentary. After a plenary session moderated by Sandra Lutchman and Gelske Martens (Common Purpose The Netherlands), parallel workshops will be organised in various social, cultural, economic and political fields. At the end of the day the results of these workshops will be brought together. The host of the day is Jeroen Busscher.
