Felix & Sofie: Susan Neiman - Moral Clarity
The US-German philosopher Susan Neiman pleads for a revaluation of moral thinking and for a new interpretation of classic ideas of right and wrong, heroism and virtuousness. For her ideas she goes back to 18th-century Enlightenment thought, where she finds a collection of ideals - happiness, reasonableness, humbleness and hope - which are considered good by every well-thinking person. Her book Moral Clarity: A Guide for Grown-up Idealists draws on many sources: the history of philosophy from Plato and Aristotle to Rawls and Rorty, from the Book of Job to the Odyssey, and from the theory of evolution to the novels of Milan Kundera and Iris Murdoch. Neiman will present her book and debate with some critics. Moderator: Ellen ter Gast.
