Felix Meritis lustrum series: Doris Hochscheid (cello) & Frans van Ruth (piano)
Felix Meritis celebrates two anniversaries in 2008: The building has been in existence for 220 years, and the Felix Meritis society for 230 years. When the building was opened on 31 October 1787, the first activity of the society was an inaugural concert. For a hundred years there was a rich tradition of giving concerts in the Concert Hall. This tradition will be brought back to life. In each concert you will hear something of the rich musical life of the 18th century.
Julius Röntgen and Ernö Dòhnányi had some things in common. Both had impressive careers as pianists, both were successful composers in the footsteps of Brahms, and both had their opus 1 published when they were still teenagers. Röntgen wrote entertainingly in his letters about Liszt, whom he had met at the age of fourteen: "And amid all this bustle of countesses and princes, Liszt like a king in his simple tails! It really was very interesting."
Programme:
Frank Bridge - Berceuse (1901), Serenade (1903)
Franz Liszt - Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (1883)
Edward Elgar - Sospiri opus 70 (adapted for cello and piano by Julius Klengel)
Julius Röntgen - Sonata in A opus 41
Ernö Dóhnányi - Sonata in B flat minor opus 8
This series is organized in cooperation with Stichting Kamermuziek Amsterdam and made possible by SNS REAAL Fund.
