Felix Meritis lustrum series: Calefax Reed Quintet
Felix Meritis celebrates two anniversaries in 2008: The building has been in existence for 220 years, and the Felix Meritis society for 230 years. When the building was opened on 31 October 1787, the first activity of the society was an inaugural concert. For a hundred years there was a rich tradition of giving concerts in the Concert Hall. This tradition will be brought back to life. In each concert you will hear something of the rich musical life of the 18th century.
The Calefax Reed Quintet established its reputation with its own arrangements. During this concert they will take a step forward: Busoni adapted Bach, Szymanowski adapted Paganini, and Duke Ellington gave Tchaikovsky a jazz interpretation. The concert will be rounded off with the suite by Grieg, one of the many composers who visited Felix Meritis.
Programme:
Edvard Grieg - Holberg Suite
Bach/Busoni - Chaconne
Paganini/Szymanowski - Caprice no 24
Tchaikovsky/Ellington - From the Nutcracker Suite
This series is organized in cooperation with Stichting Kamermuziek Amsterdam and made possible by SNS REAAL Fund.
