European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009: ‘Creative Cities’ - Linz and Wroclaw
Modern European society asks more and more of its citizens and organizations in the field of creativity, knowledge and the exchanging of ideas. People need to see change as an opportunity and open up their minds to new ideas that promote innovation and active participation in a culturally varied information society. Therefore, the European Union has declared 2009 the European Year of Creativity and Innovation (EYCI).
Within this framework EUNIC Netherlands concentrates on ‘Creative Cities'. Nine members (France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, Hungary, Lithuania, Spain and Italy) will present a prominent city from May to September. The starting point is: What makes a city a creative city?
This series starts with Linz, third city of Austria and cultural capital of Europe in 2009, and with Wroclaw, the historic forth city of Poland. Ann Branch (Head of Unit, Culture Programme and Actions, DG EAC, European Commission) will give an introduction to creative cities in the context of Cultural Capitals of Europe.
