Europe Day: Europe's Identity Crisis
In 1985, 9 May was declared Day of Europe to celebrate the unification of the EU countries. Twenty-five years later this date has no special signification for the European citizens, which underlines the relatively low popularity of "Europe" and lack of involvement of Europe and its citizens.
This prompted the International Student Organization SIB-Amsterdam to celebrate this year's Europe Day with debates and lectures on themes of European identity. What is this European identity? Can European identity co-exist with national identities? And does Islam pose a threat to European identity?
Participants will include Marietje Schaake, Frans Timmermans, Harry van Bommel, Han ten Broeke, René Cuperus, and Boris van der Ham
Organized by Studentenvereniging voor Internationale Betrekkingen (SIB) and Het Genootschap Europa. This programme was supported by Het Parool, De Groene Amsterdammer, Youth in Action and Felix Meritis.
