Erasmus Prize 2008: The New Cosmopolitan
In connection with the 50th anniversary of the Erasmus Prize, Felix Meritis and the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation have invited young Europeans from The People Network to write an essay on the subject of cosmopolitanism and citizenship. The authors of ten essays have been selected and will be invited to participate in a special debate organized on 6 November. The subject of the debate is the meaning of cosmopolitanism and the question of what it takes to be a good citizen of the world. Former Erasmus Prize laureates Claudio Magris, Adam Michnik, Pierre Bernard, Péter Forgács, Sadik Al-Azm and Eduard Nazarski (Amnesty International), as well as this year's laureate Ian Buruma, have confirmed their presence.
Introductory speech by Paul Scheffer (Professor of Urban Geographies of Place and Social Interactions, University of Amsterdam).
Moderators: Paul Schnabel and Dragan Klaic (Board members of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation)
The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation awards the Erasmus Prize every year to persons who have made an important contribution to culture in Europe. This year's theme is ‘the New Cosmopolitan' and the laureate is the Anglo-Dutch journalist and essayist Ian Buruma. On 7 November he will receive the Erasmus Prize 2008.
NB: You can attend the workshop only as observer.
