Daendels Lecture 2011: The Batavian Terror
Herman Willem Daendels
Niek van Sas (professor History after 1750, University of Amsterdam) will give this year's Daendels lecture on the period of the patriots and the Batavian-French period. Van Sas is a specialist on the so called ‘long nineteenth century' that started somewhere in the middle of the eighteenth century and lasted until 1914. A period wherein important events took place, such as the French Revolution, whose after-effects are still felt today. It is also the century of nation building and nationalism in al its' hues; from good and innocent to bad and abject.
The Daendels Foundation was founded in 1995 by the last male descendant of the patriot general Herman Willem Daendels. The Foundation's goal is to further the scientific research and presentation of the patriot period and the Batavian-French period. Also with: Willem Frijhoff (president Daendels Foundation), Peter Altena en Edwina Hagen (cultural historian).
