Cultural collaboration with Russia

The Russian economy is one of the most influential in the world. In the last decade, a new class of nouveaux riches has emerged that typically focuses on investing in art and culture - in Russia itself as well as abroad. In the Netherlands successful examples illustrating this tendency are The Hermitage Amsterdam and the Groninger Museum. An analysis of the SICA Buitengaats database leads to the conclusion that many relatively small-scale Dutch projects are already being implemented in Russia. The data also suggest that there are still many opportunities, in particular for co-production and the exchange of knowledge.

Michel Krielaars (correspondent in Moscow for NRC Handelsblad and NRC.next) will give an introduction on the subject and will be moderating the meeting. Sjeng Scheijen, specialist of Russian art and former conservator of the Groninger Museum (Groningen, the Netherlands), is investigating the opportunities for Dutch-Russian cultural collaboration. Together with Thymen Kouwenaar (Head Cultural Affairs at the Royal Dutch embassy in Moscow), Scheijen will present details of his research during the meeting. A panel of Russian professionals, consisting of Irina Korobina (director Centre of Contemporary Architecture in Moscow), Eleba Tupyseva (director Dance Agency TsEKh), Joseph Backstein (curator 2007 Moskou Biënnale Contemporary Art) and Petr Bankov (director DesignDepot and chief editor of design magazine KaK) will comment.
