A conversation with Roland Jahn
In March 2011 Roland Jahn replaced Marianne Birthler as 'Bundesbeauftragter' for the Stasi documents of the former GDR. Jahn played an important role in de GDR opposition, leading to his deportation in 1982. After the reunification of Germany he wrote a lot about the Stasi and dedicated himself to coming to terms with the past.
Jahn will engage in discussion with Beatrice de Graaf (Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism, University of Leiden) and Christie Miedema (Germany Institute Amsterdam) about his views on democracy, freedom of speech and the Wiedervereinigung. Moderator: Michel Kerres (NRC Handelsblad).
The lecture is part of the project '65 years freedom in Europe' and aims to contribute to the debate about the meaning of freedom. In this debate the Germany Institute will give particular attention to the special role of Germany in the European Union and the importance of Germany for the Netherlands.
This project was made possible by the Europe Fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
