21st Globaliseringslezing with Andrew Keen: Wisdom of the Crowd
Is the internet developing as a means of knowledge for the poor or is it becoming a new form of cultural imperialism? In fields that used to be the domain of professionals, there are now amateurs at work who give their opinion in blogs. Professional journalism is making way for amateur press coverage. The British-American internet entrepreneur and journalist Andrew Keen fears the worst for the continued existence of shades of meaning in reporting. But do people in other parts of the world feel the same? After all, uncensored reports from war areas or countries burdened by state censorship reach us only thanks to the internet.
Keen will discuss these matters with Karin Spaink (writer and journalist) and Michael Polman (founder and director of Antenna). Moderator: José van Dijck (professor of Media and Culture, University of Amsterdam)
Preceding the lecture, VPRO/Tegenlicht will show the documentary Wiki's Truth (Wiki's Waarheid).
19.00 hrs: documentary Wiki's Truth
20.30 hrs: lecture and debate with Andrew Keen
